Richard Klarberg has been the President and CEO of the Council on Accreditation since October 2001. He is an experienced negotiator, administrator and attorney with more than 30 years of nonprofit management experience. Prior to joining COA, he served as the Senior Vice President for the North Shore-LIJ Health System, a not-for-profit group of 18 hospitals. Earlier in his professional career, he was the Executive Vice President of the American Health Foundation, a not-for-profit cancer research organization, and a practicing lawyer with the firm of Javits & Javits.
After graduating from Queens College in New York with a degree in journalism, he joined VISTA and developed and implemented education and job development initiatives in the Ozark Mountains and then Harlem. He later taught developmentally disabled children in a Brooklyn public school.
A graduate of Brooklyn Law School, he is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and a Trustee of the Hospice Care Network, among other groups.
